Privacy policy

The short version: we collect only what we need to teach you math, we never store your voice or your homework photos, and we never sell your data.

Who we are

Chalkalong (chalkalong.com) is an AI math tutor that teaches on a whiteboard, out loud. When this policy says “we” or “us”, it means Chalkalong. If you have a question about your data, email [email protected].

Who can use Chalkalong

You must be 13 or older. If you live in the EU, the EEA or the UK, you must be 16 or older, unless a parent or guardian agrees for you. We ask for your birth year when you sign up so we can check this. If we learn that someone younger is using Chalkalong without permission, we delete their account and data. Parents can email us to ask about or delete their child’s data.

What we collect

  • Your account: your name and email from your Google account, your birth year, and, if you choose to answer, how you heard about us (a pick from a short list, like TikTok or a friend).
  • Your board: what you and the tutor draw and write on the whiteboard.
  • The lesson as text: a written transcript of what the tutor said and what you asked.
  • Your problem as text: the math problem written out as text or LaTeX (math code), not the photo.
  • Feedback: anything you send us, like lesson ratings, messages from the feedback form and “Report a mistake” reports. A mistake report includes the board and the last few messages of that lesson, so we can see what went wrong.
  • Basic usage analytics: which pages you visit, which buttons you use, roughly how long lessons last, and your device and browser type. We use this to find bugs and make lessons better, not for ads.

What we don’t store

  • Voice recordings. When you talk, your voice is turned into text in real time and the audio is then thrown away. We keep the text, not the recording.
  • Homework photos. Your photo, screenshot or PDF is read by our AI providers (Anthropic and Google) to work out the problem and plan the lesson, and then thrown away. We keep the problem as text.

To do this, your voice and photo do pass through our AI and voice providers (listed below) while the lesson is happening. They process it to give you the lesson and are not allowed to use it for anything else.

How we use your data

  • To teach you: plan the lesson, talk you through it and answer your questions.
  • To let you come back to your boards and lessons.
  • To keep Chalkalong safe, fix bugs, and see which parts of lessons help or confuse people.
  • To reply when you contact us, and to tell you about important changes.

We never sell your data, and we don’t share it with advertisers. We don’t train AI models on student data unless you clearly opt in, and you can change your mind at any time.

Who helps us run Chalkalong

We use a few trusted companies (called “subprocessors”) to run the service. They only get the data they need for their job.

We may also share data if the law requires it, or to protect someone’s safety.

How long we keep it, and deleting it

We keep your account, boards and lesson text while your account is open, so you can come back to them. You can delete your account at any time, or email [email protected] and ask us to delete your data. We delete it within 30 days, and it leaves our backups within 90 days. Analytics data is kept in a form that isn’t linked to your name.

Where your data goes

Some of our providers are in the United States and other countries. When your data leaves your country, we use legal safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses (and the UK equivalent) to keep it protected.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

  • show you the data we have about you, and give you a copy;
  • fix data that is wrong;
  • delete your data;
  • stop or limit how we use it, or object to a use;
  • withdraw consent you gave earlier (like opting in to training).

EU, EEA and UK (GDPR and UK GDPR)

We use your data to provide the service you asked for (contract), to keep it safe and improve it (legitimate interests), and, where needed, with your or your parent’s consent. You can complain to your local data protection authority (in the UK, the ICO), but please talk to us first so we can try to fix it.

California (CCPA)

You have the right to know what we collect, to delete it, to correct it, and not to be treated differently for using these rights. We do not sell or “share” personal information as California law defines it.

To use any of these rights, email [email protected]. We reply within 30 days.

Privacy by default

Because many of our users are teenagers, we follow the ideas in the UK Children’s Code:

  • The most private settings are on by default.
  • No ads, and no profiling for ads.
  • No public profiles, and no way for strangers to contact you.
  • We don’t track your precise location.
  • We don’t use tricks to keep you hooked or to get you to share more data.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. If the change is important, we’ll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. Last updated 2026-10-04.
